Born in the UK, Derek Drayton grew up in sweet T&T from the age of two. He holds a BSc. in Business Management from the University of the West Indies, and a MBA from Anglia Ruskin University, United Kingdom, but counts his work and life experiences as greater assets.
Derek has over twenty (20) years’ marketing and commercial experience both locally and internationally. He spent 13+ years of his career as a Regional Manager with the multinational NESTLÉ, with 5+ years working from the Dominican Republic, leading Retail and Foodservice business units across both the English and Spanish speaking Caribbean. After returning to T&T in 2008, he notes that his Spanish is fading but his Trini dialect is A+. With no wife or kids, Derek finds time to enjoy nature trekking and photography.
His personal philosophy is, “If you’re going to be in business, you are going to have to open yourselves up to more than just the professional environment and let your team know that yes, they have a life that goes on whilst they are in the company and one that goes on beyond that – but that it is the whole of a person you have to be willing to embrace.” To him, it comes down to that principle of treating others in the way you would like to be treated and showing respect and gaining respect.
Derek is motivated by new challenges and by seeing people develop and reach their potential-which includes himself. He looks for opportunities to help others along the path of development and believes that we can always learn from people, either those higher up or lower down the corporate ladder. To him, life is a constant learning process.
His stance is that the biggest opportunity we have is as a country in terms of food security and how we can leverage upon the natural resources we have. With this country’s abundance of fertile land, we must recognize the opportunity to further enhance food security and reduce our importation bill.
